Establishing His Name: Exploring the Width and Depth of God's Character

Establishing His Name was born from a desire to know my Creator more profoundly. My heart was looking for a way to be able to study God’s character. During my research, I became aware of the fact that, understanding context and culture, is crucial to being able to read the Bible. The Bible was written to a specific people that had a culture, a language and a history. Without taking those into consideration, we tend to lose out on the richness of the Word of God.

 

When I came across the names of the attributes of God that are found in the Hebrew text, I was blown away by the fact that, God provides a way for us to get a clearer picture of His character. His character attributes highlight the ways in which He connects with us, understands our struggles, and cares for us. Studying these names helped me to see just HOW concerned and interested God is in our lives. He is not some far off powerful being sitting on a throne, being entertained by our antics on earth. He is a close God. He is a caring and loving God. He is a God that longs to have an intimate and interactive relationship with His children!

One of the things that I felt was important when writing this devotional was to give you, as the reader, space, both mentally and physically as you study the names of the attributes that represent God. What do I mean by that? I added plenty of room for a journaling prompt at the end of each chapter to be able to journal your response to what you learned with each name. In addition, I chose not to give a specific time indicator such as weeks for each name. I felt that each reader should have the freedom to go as quickly or slowly as they desired when reading and studying the names. It has been my experience that when I would study a name, God would have an amazing way in which He manifested that name, in particular, during the days that followed. Those experiences were so meaningful and brought those facets of His character to light in such a tangible way! My hope is that you have a similar experience, that the Word become a living breathing thing that sparks a deep desire to want to more intimately your Creator!
